What to Wear for Engagement Photos | Complete Outfit Guide

Picking what to wear for your engagement photos is honestly one of the most stressful parts of the whole process. You have the session on the calendar, you’re excited, you know the photos are going to be so special, and then suddenly you’re standing in your closet thinking, “I have absolutely nothing to wear.”

So consider me your engagement session outfit guide, guru, captain, and emotional support photographer through the slightly chaotic world of figuring out what to wear.

The good news is that it does not have to be complicated. I’m going to walk you through all of my favorite tips and tricks so you can pick outfits that photograph beautifully, feel like you, and match the vibe of your session.

Option One: Pick Your Location First.

If you already have a location in mind, that is perfect. Maybe it’s the bar where you met, your favorite park, a coffee shop you love, a rooftop downtown, the beach, or even your own home. Once we have the location, we can style your outfits to match the setting so everything feels cohesive.

For example:

• If we are shooting in a golden field, you might want something flowy, romantic, and soft.
• If we are doing a chic downtown rooftop session, you might lean more modern, a little dressed up, or even slightly edgy.
• If we are at the beach, lighter fabrics, neutrals, and pieces that move well in the wind are always beautiful.

The location gives us a starting point, and then your outfits help complete the story.

Option Two: Pick Your Outfits First.

Option Two: Pick Your Outfits First.

If you have a dream outfit you have been dying to wear, we can absolutely start there instead. Maybe you just bought the perfect dress. Maybe your man got a new pair of boots he has been wanting to show off. Maybe you have a very specific vibe in mind and the outfit is the main character. Send me your ideas, and we can choose a location that fits what you want to wear.

The goal is for the whole session to feel intentional, whether the location inspires the outfits or the outfits inspire the location.

Natural vs. Urban Backdrops.

Another thing to think about is whether you want a natural backdrop or an urban backdrop.

What Colors Should You Wear for Engagement Photos?

The right outfits can take your photos from “oh, cute” to “wait, I am obsessed.”

But that does not mean you have to overthink it. A few simple guidelines can make a huge difference.

Should Couples Match Outfits for Engagement Photos?

No — coordinate, don’t match. Identical outfits tend to look dated (think old-school matching family photos), while complementary colors and textures look intentional and timeless.

For example, if you are wearing a butter yellow dress, your partner could wear a light blue button-down with navy pants. Blue and yellow work beautifully together. Cream and brown also look so good together. So do white and tan, sage and denim, or dusty blue and cream.

The goal is for your outfits to look like they belong in the same story without looking like you bought a matching set.

Neutrals and Muted Tones Are Your Best Friends.

I would also avoid large logos, neon colors, overly busy patterns, or big/wide stripes. If you want to wear a pattern, I usually recommend making it one piece of the outfit instead of the whole thing. For example, a cheetah print skirt with a neutral sweater will usually photograph better than a full cheetah print maxi dress.

What Fabrics Are Best for Movement in Photos?

Fabrics that flow, drape, and move well — like flowy dresses and skirts — photograph beautifully if you want those dreamy, cinematic, running-through-a-field type photos.

This one is especially important if you love that kind of shot.

For my girls, if you know you want movement in your photos, think about dresses or skirts that can catch the wind or move when you walk. If you are wearing something super tight and restrictive, it may look amazing standing still, but it might make movement harder.

If you want to run, twirl, sit, walk, dance, or play around, make sure your outfit allows you to actually do that.

For my guys, this applies too. Make sure your pants fit comfortably and your shirt allows you to move without constantly adjusting.

The goal is cute and comfortable. We want both.

What Should I Wear for Engagement Photos? (Women’s Guide)

There’s no single “right” outfit for women in engagement photos — the goal is to look like an elevated version of yourself, not someone else.

You do not have to wear a formal dress just because these are engagement photos. If you never wear dresses and you feel most like yourself in jeans, wear the jeans. If you love overalls and that feels like you, wear the overalls. If you want to go full romantic dress moment, I will be cheering you on.

What Should I Wear for Engagement Photos? (Men’s Guide)

For men, the easiest formula is a solid-colored top with subtle texture, well-fitted pants (not shorts), and clean, intentional shoes.

Guys, I know a lot of you let your girl pick everything out, but you definitely get a say here too. You deserve to feel good in your photos, and a few intentional choices can make a huge difference.

On Top

For spring and summer, try:

• short sleeve linen button-down
• lightweight button-down
• elevated cotton t-shirt
• textured short sleeve shirt
• casual overshirt

When I say elevated t-shirt, I mean something with a little more structure. Think the thicker fabric, better collar, nicer fit kind of t-shirts you would find at places like Abercrombie, H&M, or Hollister. Not the thin undershirt you would wear under a suit.

For fall and winter, try:

• chunky sweater
• henley
• button-down with a jacket
• t-shirt with a blazer
• flannel
• coat
• suit, if we are going more formal

Year round, solid colors and subtle patterns are usually best. You want your outfit to feel intentional without pulling all the attention away from your face.

One huge tip: avoid golf polos. They usually do not photograph well because the fabric can create a weird digital ripple effect in the camera called moiré. Basically, it can look swirly or distorted in photos. Not our favorite.

How Should You Prep Hair, Makeup, and Grooming for Engagement Photos?

Professional hair and makeup are definitely not required, but it can be a great excuse to treat yourself or test your wedding day look.

If you are doing your own hair and makeup, choose something that will last through movement, weather, and humidity. If your curls usually fall out in the heat, either go heavy on the hairspray or choose a different style that you know will hold up better. If you know your makeup tends to get shiny, bring a little powder or blotting paper.

For nails, if you usually get polish, this is a great time for a fresh manicure or a simple clean color. If you do not polish your nails, that is totally fine too. Just make sure they are clean, trimmed, and ready for close-up ring shots.

For my guys, if you do not love the look of a fresh haircut, get it done a few days before your session so it has time to settle a little. Go ahead and trim your facial hair, clean up your nails, and moisturize your hands. I bring lotion with me, but dry hands can show up in close-up photos, especially if we are taking pictures of you holding hands or showing off the ring. Put some lotion on before you leave the house, and you will be good to go.

For both of you, dry lips and dry hands will show up in close-up photos. If you are prone to chapped lips (looking at you, guys), start using Vaseline or Aquaphor before bed a few nights before your session. That way, you do not have to put a ton on right before photos and feel like your lips look super glossy.

What Should I Expect on Engagement Session Day?

By the time session day gets here, the hard part is done. You have planned, you have prepped, and now it is time to just enjoy it.

You do not have to know a single pose ahead of time. You can absolutely send me photos you have seen on Pinterest or Instagram if there is something specific you love, but I will guide you through all of it.

I will tell you where to put your hands, where to look, when to walk, when to snuggle in, when to be silly, and when to just laugh through it.

We will get a mix of:

• Fun candid moments
• Movement-based photos
• Sweet romantic portraits
• Close-up details
• And a few classic grandmother photos

What I call “grandmother photos” — the ones where you are both smiling at the camera and your grandmother would immediately put it on the mantle. We need those too!

A few session day reminders:

• Eat a little something before you come so you are not running on an empty stomach.
• Plan to arrive a few minutes early so we can start on time.
• Bring comfortable shoes if we will be walking around.
• Bring any outfit changes or props packed and ready.
• Do not overthink the posing.
• Trust the process.

Some of the things I ask you to do may feel silly in the moment, but I promise there is a method to the madness. The best photos happen when you are focused on each other, not on me.

Think of it like a date night with a third wheel. Me. I’m the third wheel.

Relax, be yourselves, and let me take care of the rest.

What Happens After Your Engagement Session?

After your session, you can relax knowing the hardest part is over and the fun part is about to begin.

I will send you a few sneak peeks within 48 hours so you can relive the magic right away and share a few favorites if you want to. Your full gallery will be delivered within a week or two in my signature editing style, ready to download, print, and share however you would like.

This is the part where it gets really fun. You get to cozy up together, scroll through your photos, and start imagining where they will live. Maybe they will be framed around your home. Maybe they will go in a keepsake album. Maybe they will be all over your save-the-dates and wedding website.

However you choose to enjoy them, these photos become a little piece of your story that you can look back on for years.

FAQ: Engagement Photo Outfits

Do couples need to match for engagement photos? No. Matching outfits tend to look dated. Coordinating colors and textures — without wearing the exact same thing — looks more natural and timeless.

Can you wear shorts for engagement photos? Generally, no. Pants almost always photograph more polished, even at the beach or in warm weather. Lightweight linen pants are a good warm-weather alternative. The only exception is a true swimming/beach moment where trunks fit the scene.

What colors should you avoid in engagement photos? Avoid large logos, neon colors, overly busy patterns, and big or wide stripes. If you want a patterned piece, use it as one element of the outfit rather than the whole look.

Why shouldn’t men wear golf polos for photos? The fabric used in most golf polos can create a rippling visual distortion in photos called moiré, which makes the shirt look swirly or warped on camera.

What should I wear for engagement photos in a field vs. downtown? For a golden field or natural setting, flowy, romantic, and soft fabrics work best. For a downtown or rooftop setting, a more modern, slightly dressed-up look tends to photograph better.
