There are few things sweeter than getting to photograph a surprise proposal, especially when the person planning it has been paying such close attention.
Seth reached out because he was planning to propose to his girlfriend Caitlyn and wanted the moment to feel beautiful, private, and true to her. One of the sweetest parts of his inquiry was that he mentioned Caitlyn already loved my work and would send it to him regularly. That says so much about Seth. He knew what she loved, and he wanted to make sure the proposal felt like something she would be excited about, not just in the moment, but in the photos too.
When we started talking through location ideas, Seth mentioned that Caitlyn would love a quiet, low-traffic outdoor space where the proposal could truly feel like a surprise. After chatting through a few options, we landed on Cator Woolford Gardens in Atlanta.
Cator Woolford Gardens is one of the best proposal locations in Atlanta for couples who want something romantic, private, and outdoors.
One of the biggest reasons it worked so well for Seth and Caitlyn is that Cator Woolford requires a reservation for photo sessions. That keeps the space lower traffic, which is a huge help when you are planning a surprise proposal and do not want strangers walking through the background of your photos.
It is also one of the few Atlanta garden locations that can have Sunday availability. A lot of Atlanta venues reserve their weekends for weddings, so finding a beautiful, private-feeling outdoor spot on a Sunday can be genuinely tricky. Cator Woolford ended up being the perfect fit.
The gardens have so much variety in one location, which is one of the things that makes it so good for both proposals and engagement sessions.
Within the property you have beautiful walkways, lush greenery, stone staircases, little bridges over the creek, open green space, and tall mature trees. At the top of the hill there is the house with its columns, checkerboard floors, and magnolia trees surrounding it. The whole property feels cohesive and romantic, but each area gives you a completely different look. You can get soft and garden-like photos in one spot and something more architectural and dramatic just a short walk away, all without getting in the car.
Seth let me know what time they were planning to arrive, and I got there a few minutes early so I could get settled, choose my hiding spot, and be ready before they walked in.
When they arrived, Seth casually pointed out a few things around the property as if they were just exploring together. Caitlyn had no idea what was coming. Once they reached the little colonnade area, he dropped down to one knee and asked her to marry him.
I started photographing from across the lawn to give them real privacy during the actual moment. I love doing it that way because even though the photos matter, the experience matters more. Once I could tell they were wrapping up and soaking it all in, I moved in closer to capture the hugs, the smiles, the ring, and all that very sweet just-got-engaged energy.

Caitlyn wore a blue and white flowy dress that photographed beautifully and gave us so much movement. It felt romantic and effortless and was perfect for the garden setting.
Seth wore khakis with a white linen button-down, which was a great warm-weather choice that still looked polished in photos. He also followed one of my biggest warm-weather tips without even being asked: skip the shorts. Even when it is hot outside, pants almost always photograph more put-together for engagement sessions and couples portraits.
Their outfits worked so well together because they felt coordinated without being too matchy. The soft blue, white, and neutral tones looked beautiful against the greenery, stone, and garden backdrop at Cator Woolford. Reserve the space ahead of time. Cator Woolford requires a reservation for photo sessions, which is actually a huge benefit since it keeps the location more private and low-traffic on the day of your proposal. Once we pick a date and time, I will do this for you!
Plan your timing around the light. Earlier morning and later evening photograph best, especially during the warmer months in Atlanta. Sunset is particularly beautiful here because the mature trees filter and warm the light in a way that feels really cinematic.
Have a loose plan for where you want to propose. The colonnade is a really popular spot and photographs beautifully. The stone staircases and garden pathways are great options too. A good photographer can help you talk through the best spot ahead of time based on your vision.
Think about what your partner will be wearing. If you want the proposal to flow into an engagement session afterward, it is worth gently steering things so they are wearing something they will feel confident in. You do not have to give away the whole plan to do this.
Build in a few minutes after the proposal before portraits. You do not want to rush straight from yes into posed photos. A few minutes to breathe, hug, laugh, and actually take it in makes the transition feel natural and makes the photos even more meaningful.
